Head of Software Delivery
Type of Role: Contract-to-Hire
Work Model: Remote (Houston-based candidates preferred)
Overview
The Head of Software Delivery will lead software execution across a broad operational technology portfolio, including customer-facing platforms, accessioning, revenue cycle management, enterprise systems, integrations, and business development technologies.
This senior leadership role owns delivery governance, planning, resource forecasting, production stability, and execution across multiple concurrent initiatives. The leader will partner closely with Product, Operations, Clinical, Commercial, Architecture, Security, and Technology stakeholders to maintain delivery momentum while strengthening accountability, engineering discipline, and execution quality.
The ideal candidate is a highly experienced technology leader with a strong technical foundation in Java, Microservices, modern software architecture, and AI-focused engineering practices. The role requires experience leading large globally distributed teams, managing multiple initiatives simultaneously, and combining strong technical judgment with excellent numerical, analytical, and presentation skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Own software delivery across the operational technology portfolio from planning and prioritization through release and production support.
- Establish consistent delivery governance, planning, status reporting, resource forecasting, and decision-making practices across distributed teams.
- Translate product roadmaps and business priorities into executable delivery plans with clear scope, estimates, dependencies, staffing requirements, and release milestones.
- Lead multiple strategic and operational initiatives simultaneously while maintaining visibility into commitments, capacity, risks, dependencies, and resource needs.
- Provide technical leadership across software engineering teams working with Java, Microservices, APIs, enterprise integrations, and modern distributed architectures.
- Improve delivery predictability, release discipline, engineering productivity, production stability, incident response, and execution transparency.
- Partner with architecture, security, product, and business leaders to resolve dependencies, manage tradeoffs, and apply appropriate engineering, privacy, reliability, and security standards.
- Communicate delivery status, risks, operational metrics, resource needs, and key decisions clearly through executive-level reporting and presentations.
Required Experience & Skills
- 15+ years of progressive technology, software engineering, and software delivery experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading large software delivery organizations through managers, senior leaders, or directors, including teams of at least 50 people across globally distributed locations.
- Strong technical background in Java, Microservices, REST APIs, distributed systems, and modern application architecture.
- Strong experience managing multiple concurrent product portfolios, enterprise initiatives, contractors, and globally distributed delivery teams.
- Strong command of delivery planning, capacity forecasting, estimation, dependency management, release management, and production support.
- Ability to multitask effectively and lead several high-priority strategic and operational initiatives simultaneously.
- Strong AI-focused mindset, including an understanding of how AI can support software engineering, delivery productivity, planning, analysis, testing, and operational efficiency.
- Excellent numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret delivery metrics, capacity data, performance indicators, productivity measures, and operational trends.
- Strong presentation and executive communication skills, with experience presenting complex technical and delivery information to senior leadership.
- Proven experience improving delivery predictability, release quality, incident response, backlog execution, engineering productivity, and organizational accountability.
- Experience working closely with Product, Operations, Architecture, Security, Engineering, and executive stakeholders.
- Experience in healthcare, diagnostics, or another regulated technology environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience in diagnostics, genomic testing, laboratory operations, or other healthcare technology environments.
- Experience leading customer-facing applications, operational platforms, enterprise systems, and complex integrations.
- Experience modernizing legacy applications and transitioning toward Microservices or service-oriented architectures while maintaining business continuity.
- Experience managing offshore or globally distributed software delivery models.
- Working knowledge of privacy, security, compliance, and audit requirements for sensitive healthcare data.
- Houston-based candidates are preferred, although the role is remote.
