CHALLENGE
Digitize and Anonymize Archived Images for Medical Research
Our Client, a government agency in the healthcare field, wanted to provide online access to a large archive of X-ray images for use in medical research.
The custom web application needed to provide:
- Public access to meta data to assess image availability
- Secure access for processing of requests for images
- Ability to anonymize images to protect patient privacy
SOLUTION
Secure Research Process for Creating Access to Images
BigRio developed a solution that would allow the agency to provide researchers access to the archive by
- Using standard X-ray digitization to create DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) images meeting stringent National Archives standards
- Creating a process for researchers to assess image sample sizes and request secure access
- Using computer vision Al to identify and remove all Personal Identifiable Information (PII) data from images
- Creating a capability for on-going database schema changes post deployment to create more dynamic research data usage
RESULTS
A Treasure Trove of X-Ray Data
BigRio helped the agency create a streamlined process for releasing a valuable data source for population studies while maintaining patient privacy. The process allowed the agency to
- Create secure access to 1000s of X-Ray images
- Automate the creation of high-quality images to meet research standards
- Ensure compliance with strict privacy regulations
- Make anonymized images more easily available to medical researchers
